PiM's Ministry to the Mayan & Mestizo (Indian/Spanish) of Guatemala

Karvin was first called to missions in 1982 to the Mayan Indians of Guatemala, but had few chances to pursue that calling, rather the Lord led him to Ecuador. Karvin went to Guatemala on a preaching/teaching trip in November 1986, then in 2006 he was able to pursue that calling to Guatemala by returning twice/year to conduct work camps and seminaries for church leaders. PiM is currently working with 30 churches in Guatemala composed of both Mayan and Mestizo (mixture of Mayan & Spanish).

New Church Plant & Construction Parramos, Guatemala

January 2021 we partnered with CRI, Pastor Gudiel and the Church of God in Guatemala to help plant a new congregation and construct a building for the people in Parramos. We also helped Mayan widow Margarita and her children. Your donations made this project possible; we thank you. Margarita made a video expressing her gratitude which can be seen on Facebook. Covid-19 has caused serious problems for those we work with in Guatemala. Public transportation which most of our people depend on has been non-existent in many places; making it impossible for people to work or buy necessities as food. PiM has sent over $6,500 to help our people during these difficult days to buy food and assist Pastor Francisco's family due to his death. Below are picture of some who received help thanks to your donations and our partner missionaries in Guatemala.

Mission to Mayan Villages of Santa Catarina & Jaibalito, Atitlan, Guatemala

August 29 - September 5, 2019

PiM sent four people to partner with two other missionary organizations, "Filling in the Blanks" and Joe Betsill to Jaibalito, the smallest and most remote of the Mayan settlements on the shores of Lake Atitlan. It is reached only by water taxis. Among the indigenous population, the primary language spoken is Kaqchikel. The majority also speak Spanish. We first visited the Mayan village of Santa Catarina to distribute food and sweaters to 25 widows on Friday. Saturday and Monday we traveled by boat to Jaibalito, painted inside and front of the church with the help of the new pastor and five Mayans. We also distributed food to 7 families, most were widows. The mother of one family, died the previous Friday, leaving the father with 8 children. Another was a widow whose husband died a month earlier. Three Mayan women prepared our meal and taught us about their culture. Showed us how to prepare tortillas, which we made for the meal.

Karvin also had the opportunity to spend time with Soledad and husband Herbert, who direct the "Chance Project" in Guatemala, which we help support. He investigated other avenues of ministry after the mission team left.

February 14 - 20, 2019 Mission to Guatemala

Below are pictures of our latest mission to the Prince of Peace Home for Girls in Guatemala, ministering to the 42 girls who come from abusive backgrounds. For three days we did general maintenance of painting two classrooms and building a storage room in the school. We also had devotions and VBS with them for three days, with a ice cream party one night. We hope the pictures below will inspire you to pray for these girls and/or give funds to this ministry of providing a safe, Christian refuge for those who have been abandoned and/or abused in some way.

August 28 - September 4, 2018 Mission to Guatemala

A 7-member team spent a week at the Prince of Peace Home for Girls in Guatemala August 28 - September 4, 2018. Our mission was general maintenance of painting and installing new lights, crafts with the 59 girls and devotions three nights in the houses. We had a birthday party for them, especially for those born the month of August. Most of the girls in the home are victims of abandonment and/or abuse. The pictures below help tell of our experience...

Survivor of the June 3, 2018 Volcano Fuego in Guatemala

With 2-month old Yoselin in her arms, her mother tried to outrun the 65 miles/hour pyroclastic flow. Realizing she couldn't, she gave Yoselin to a man racing by on a motorcycle before she died. Sandy and Karvin visited Yoselin on September 5, 2018 at the House of Hope where she was receiving care since her mom was killed. DNA has matched her with her dad who survived the volcano. A church and PiM built them a house and bought them new furniture. Her dad's sister also lives with them now for she lost her daughter, Sandy, who was expecting a baby in the volcano.

February 27 - March 6, 2018 Guatemala Trip

A 7-member team returned to Guatemala to build a 3-room house for a widow with six children. After 3 1/2 days the house was completed with a dedication on Sunday afternoon by Pastor Lopez of the Peniel Church in La Boca Del Monte. The women of the team also held a VBS for the 27 kids and 9 mothers who attended. The following pictures are of the local church getting the site ready and helping us with the construction.

A 9-member team was in Guatemala, August 29 - September 5, 2017 to build a 20' x 20' house for an abandoned Mayan mother with two small children and paint the living room/bedroom of Concepcion Ramirez, the Mayan woman whose image has been on the Guatemalan quarter since 1959. She and her family were early Church of God pioneers in Guatemala.

September 2016 Boca Del Monte Church, Guatemala City

We worked 4 days laying blocks on the bathrooms and sound room, pouring concrete for the ramp going down into the sanctuary. A member of the church installed 6 ceiling fans that PiM bought, which were running for the afternoon service on Sunday when Karvin preached. The women of our mission team had VBS for the 25-30 children each afternoon and crafts for the women in the mornings. With the money from PiM the church building should be completed soon.

March 1 - 8, 2016 we returned to the Mayan village of La Cumbre, this time to remodel the radio station that airs our Spanish program "Christian Broadcasting Hope". The following pictures should give you a vision of our work among the Mayan Indians. This radio station was used in the civil war (1960-1996) to warn the Mayan when Federal troops or rebels were in the area. Now it broadcasts hope.

This is how the radio station looked when we arrived. The nationals had already removed roof so we could raise walls, put on new roof and remodel inside.

September 22 - 29, 2015 a team of 14 were in Guatemala to work in the highland Mayan village of La Cumbre. Our mission was to build a kitchen at the church and hold a VBS for the children in the community. Wednesday - Saturday we assisted the nationals in the construction of the kitchen with a wood-burning stove, laying of concrete sidewalks and building of tin roofs. One hundred children attended the activities along with ten or so mothers. The following pictures will help you understand what we experienced. Karvin met with the local Christian radio station and made arrangements for the Spanish program "Christians Broadcasting Hope" to be aired twice/day for 6 months. This will be the first time the Mayans will have the opportunity to hear CBH by radio.
